Rent arrears

If you're a landlord of business premises and the tenant's behind with the rent, there are hard choices to be made. We'll help you make them and make sure you don't put a foot wrong legally:

• For the time being - though the law may change - you can distrain for the rent, by instructing a certificated bailiff to seize the tenant's goods and sell them to raise the money
• You can sue the tenant, and hope for a judgment that you can enforce by making the tenant bankrupt or putting a charging order on the tenant's house
• You can repossess the premises and put an end to the lease, in some cases without the need to go to court first

Sometimes negotiation with the landlord or the landlord's advisers can lead to a solution. Sometimes the landlord has overstepped the mark and evicted you or seized your goods illegally, even if you did owe rent. Sometimes even if repossession has already taken place, we can go to court and get you back in.
